The new future: Instagram algorithm update

March 29, 2016 marked the apparent kick off of the algorithm change on Instagram. Like with Facebook, Instagram will now show you images that they deem you ‘care about’.

What does this mean? The new algorithm will weigh in a variety of social signals, including the number of engagements on a post and content you have interacted with in the past. While many are calling it ‘the death of Instagram’ and have even started a petition on change.org to reverse this update, others are less dramatic and telling the many to ‘calm down’.

From Instagram:  The order of photos and videos in your feed will be based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post. As we begin, we’re focusing on optimizing the order — all the posts will still be there, just in a different order.

What does this mean for you? If you are willing and able to analyse your results and find out what content works the best (and then take action on your findings) you will enjoy high Instagram engagement. And – of course – there are easy changes you can make to ensure your community sees your posts. Please be aware that one of these changes is not to post more and know that your Servant team will be contacting you to discuss next steps to help you through this change.

Looking for a quick fix? Don’t be too quick to follow the crowd. The popular update (that spammed feeds last night and continues to do so today) is to get your community to ‘follow your feed’.  Some examples of this call to action are outlined below, however within less than 24 hours, this process has already caused backlash with Instagram community members waking up to ‘too many notifications’ and unsubscribing to those they had followed last night. As with anything social, this change will cause a stir and then settle down once people get used to it. We recommend not jumping on the ‘death of Instagram’ bandwagon and watching the analytical outcome before making any rash decision.
